Public Law Numbering

1ST CONGRESS THROUGH 56TH CONGRESS

Laws from the 1st Congress through the 56th are Chapters and should be referenced as such.

The individual page should display the “Chapter” followed by the number.  The session information should display following the Congress.

57TH CONGRESS THROUGH 76TH CONGRESS

Laws from the 57th Congress through the 76th have both a Chapter and Public Law or Resolution number and should display both.  The documents should display the chapter number and beneath that the Public Law or Resolution Number.

Note that the Public Law number does not include the Congress and appears as:

Public, No.

Pub. Res., No.

77TH CONGRESS THROUGH 81ST CONGRESS

Laws from the 77th Congress through the 81st have both a Chapter and Public Law or Resolution number and should display both.  The documents should display the chapter number and beneath that the Public Law Number.

Note that the Public Law number does not include the Congress.

82nd CONGRESS THROUGH 84th CONGRESS

Laws from the 82nd Congress through the 84th have both a Public Law and a Chapter number but the Public Law number displays first.  The documents should display the Public Law Number and beneath it the chapter number.

Note that the Public Law number does not include the Congress.

85th CONGRESS and forward

Laws from the 85th Congress and forward have a Public Law number only, which does include the Congress.
